Taylor’s University IFEC Collaborates With YLCO Museum

Taylor’s University – IFEC visited YLCO Museum  recently to understand about the work that YLCO families have done to preserve the family network and their legacy.

Taylor’s IFEC - International Family Enterprise Centre.. ”is devoted to empowering the community of business families in preserving generational family legacy and advancing knowledge on family business management. The centre serves as a platform for advocating and facilitating business families for peer-learning, networking and growth to empower business families through  curated experiences and actionable insights for wealth and legacy management”.

Twenty students accompanied by Ms Shan Loy, Manager, Family Business & Partnerships / IFEC arrived by bus to YLCO Museum on the morning of 25 October 2024. Ignatius Chew YLCO Museum curator and his team welcomed the delegation and took a group photograph before the start of functions.  

Ignatius explained that the patriarchs of the families were all migrants who arrived during the late 19th century and made their fortunes through their hard work and  enterprising spirit.

YLCO families from the arrival of migrants till the 4th generation .....

The newly wealthy families intermarried. That was a time of arranged marriages when the children did not have a choice of their partners. By the third generation the families were capable to send their children overseas to the west to be better educated. Those that returned helped in the family business which grew and expanded it to what it is today. One family has started a legacy similar to what the IFEC had envisioned. 

The Lim’s through Datuk Lim Keng Kay is a 3^rd generation Lim who was a mining engineer. Datuk KK Lim used to say that ‘World Peace Comes Through Education’. He started a kindergarten and over the years added an English language training school. This has now expanded to colleges of higher learning. 

His vision was carried on through his 4^th generation son Datuk Lim Si Boon who built this 4 storey environmentally green building. It was the family home but now it houses BVH the holding company for its other ventures.

As such the YLCO Family is International, our Museum can be termed as an Enterprise though it is non-profit and the Green Building as our Centre, an IFEC.

Ignatius' nephew Lim Ching Beng touched on another branch, the Khaw family, 

The YLCO family has one 'celebrity', none other that Datin Janet Yeoh the mother of international actress Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh. The students were keen to know of Datin Janet's background and that of her daughter and began asking questions about her family.
