The whole of Malaysia rejoiced at this achievement, a Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh from Ipoh and the first woman from an Asian background to receive an Oscar for Best Actress at the 95th Oscar Awards.

The film where she starred in ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ won seven awards. It was a great honour for Michelle and an even greater joy for the country.

…and to her Mum and the family …’ I have to dedicate this to my mom, all the moms in the world, because they are really the superheroes. And without them, none of us would be here tonight. She’s 84, and I’m taking this home to her — she’s watching right now, in Malaysia, with my family and friends…I love you guys, I’m bringing this home to you…To my godchildren, to my sisters, all of them, to my brothers—oh god, to my family! Michelle and Jean Todt and the Oscar award

Michelle came from Ipoh or as they say, she is Ipoh Mali.  A lot of us knew her, she studied in the Main Convent, went swimming in the Ipoh Swimming Club, many of us knew her parents the late Dato Yeoh Kian Teik and Datin Janet Yeoh …. Why she is practically like the family next door.

Maybe that is why many of us in Ipoh felt a sense of affinity when she won the award this morning and were rooting for her these last few days. She may be the Bond Girl, the actress of Crazy Rich Asians and now an Oscar winner but more than that she is ‘Ipoh Mali’ and no one can take that away.
