Grandchildren of Chew Boon Hong 1st Visit To YLCO Museum - Learn Something More About Grandfather

The visit by the descendants of Chew Boon Hong was a very delightful coming soon after the visit of Sophia Lo the daughter of Chew Gaik Swee, the 10^th daughter of Chew Boon Juan.

The visitors were siblings Puan Sri Sharizan@Chew Poh Chan, Chew Po Sim and Chew Hoe Soon and wife Katherin Quah Peng Hwa. They were children Chew Beng Khong and grandchildren of Chew Boon Hong. It was their first time to the YLCO museum although Poh Chan had visited the Chew musum earlier.

Arriving at 12pm they suggested they have lunch before proceeding to tour the museum.

Ignatius showed the other entities at 1 Jalan Lasam starting at the ‘Start Café, the Perak Academy library and Ipoh Echo office before proceeding to YLCO Museum.

As Ignatius brought the guest around the exhibits and shared the family history of the brothers there was a continuous questions and answer with Hoe Soon and Poh Chan.  However there were many points that their grandfathers autobiography hilited and helped settled family queries. According to Ignatius, the autobiography of Chew Boon Hong ..... 

1...encouraged him to start the museum at Ban Hoe Seng in 2012.

2. Boon Hongs autobiography ended the dispute of who arrived in Malaya first...Boon Seong or Boon Juan and who was the wealthiest first.

3a. Chew Boon Hong was an advisor to the Teluk Intan Chew Association. His name was included in the minutes of meetings held in Teluk Intan.

3b. Chew Seng Hian, a committee member of the Teluk Intan Chew association had never met him and was trying to locate him. A 105year old woman from the association told Seng Hian to go to Ban Hoe Seng, Ipoh for the information.

3c. Seng Hian met with Ignatius Chew at Ban Hoe Seng. Ignatius informed him about the life of his uncle and his brothers. Seng Hian asked for a photo of Boon Hong and was given the old photo of the four brothers.

3d. Seng Hian sent the photos to China and had them included in the next interval when the Yellow China Book was updated and reprinted.

3e. Chew Boon Hong and brothers had assisted their Heng Lim ancestral village in Xiamen since the early 1900's. Their assistance enabled the village to build their first school the 'Private Xingyuan Primary School' in 1921. For their contributions their photos are honored and hang in Heng Lim village temple in Xiamen.

Other than explaining the achievements of Chew Boon Hong Ignatius also touched on the the Chew families.

4a. Grandmother Goh Lean Kee was a brilliant matchmaker. She matched the families of Khoo Sian Ewe to Chew Choon Hock in Penang and the family of Yeoh Khuan Joo with Chew Gaik Tiew in Ipoh.

5a. Hoe Soon and Poh Chan recalled the black Ang Ku desert that they had when visiting. Hoe Soon recalled he was very close to the grandchildren of Chew Choon Wah. Chew Suat Inn d/o  Choon Wah married Koon Fook Weng and had many sons and stayed in Chateau Gardens. Hoe Soon and their sons were school mates and friends.

Chew Boon Hong was an Imperial Scholar in China. His brothers supported him until he completed his studies. When Chew Boon Seong died in 1909 Boon Hong came to Malaya to help his brother Chew Boon Juan. His coming was a blessing today as his autobiography has enabled the connection between Ipoh-Teluk Intan and the ancestral Heng Lim village in China and solved any doubts in the family.

It was meaningful encounter for the family of Chew Boon Hong to hear and witness the graphic journey of their grandfathers contribution till the present time.
