My 96YO Mum-Mrs Yeoh Kian Teik, Visited Three Schools In One Morning

(L) with principal Phoon of SMI the (R) with Madam Moy Ooi Thye, Mrs Yeoh Kian Teik and Principal Mary Ho of Ave Maria Convent

Mum was a real trooper the day before, taking the 3 school visits in Ipoh in her stride. First was St Michael’s Institution early in the morning, as Chief Guest at their annual speech day to give awards where my brother Ron was the Guest of Honour giving the opening address.  This was followed by a small naming ceremony after our father at the science lab in recognition of a donation to the school’s development fund by the family estate.

Then it was on to Ave Maria Convent where she had been its first non-nun principal in her last two years of service before retiring.  She was warmly welcomed back to her old office by school principal Mary Ho and the school’s board and alumni members and staff, who were to host a dinner for her that night.

Final stop, her alma mater (and mine), Methodist Girls’ School, met by principal Puan Lee and board chairman.  At 96, she could well be the school’s oldest alumnus.

When she was introduced to the 4 prefects who were leading the walkabout, she immediately and authoritatively declared, “I want to have a photo taken with you”.

Once a principal, always a principal!

If she was not tired at the end of the day, I was.
