| The Chew's celebrate the Teluk Intan Chew Association 150th anniversary-1874-2014 |
The Chew
Association of Teluk Intan celebrated their 150th anniversary
recently. Held at Teluk Intan early in May over 600 members from China,
Singapore and Malaysia showed up for their grand celebration.
Earlier 60
of its members arrived in Penang from Heng Lim village, Xiamen, Fujiian, China. They visited Chew Jetty and then made a stopover at
YLCO (Yeoh Lim Chew and Oh) museum in
Ipoh before proceeding to Teluk Intan to meet fellow clansmen and attended the grand celebrations.
For the record the Chew brothers, Chew Boon Juan and Chew Boon Hong had a record of presence in Teluk Intan. Chew Boon Juan’s daughter Chew Gaik Hoon who married Ong Kok Hoo used to live in Teluk Anson when they were married. Gaik Hoon's husband looked after Boon Juan's estate in the 1930's. Chew Boon Hong was trustee of the Teluk Intan Association.
Deputy president Chew Seng Hian said the first time that he was told about Chew Boon Hong's financial aid towards Heng Lim village was in 2012 when he visited the village in China. When he returned he decided to find Chew Boon Hong’s descendants. His investigation led him to Ban Hoe Seng and Ignatius Chew the grandson of Chew Boon Juan.

The Teluk
Intan Chews have long history stretching 150 years from the year 1874. That was
the year 7 Chew families left Penang and decided to move to Teluk Anson, the
name given to it by the colonial masters. Interestingly the 7 families were all from Heng Lim village, Xiamen, China formerly called Heng Wah Siah.
Teluk Anson was a river port that brought produce from the north eg tin (from the Kinta valley), rubber and copra via the Kinta river and Perak river and transferring them to sea going ships for onforwarding to Penang and Singapore. Initially
they did business but later became coolies.
The association was registered as the Khiam Thye Chew See Heng Wah Siah, Teluk Anson in 1960.
